The Fermi Paradox is less an instrument of inquiry than it is a salesman’s tool, exploiting the credulity of an unsuspecting audience. The ethical skeptic examines not merely claims to presence, but equally the concealed assumptions, appeals to authority, and presumptions of absence by which competing explanations are excluded, or defaulting hidden conclusions are sold.
Putative Paradox Proceeds Per Piss-Poor Priors
The following statement is generally what is understood as The Fermi Paradox:
Given the enormous number of stars and potentially habitable planets in the universe, and the billions of years available for intelligent civilizations to emerge, some extraterrestrial civilizations should have developed advanced technology and spread throughout the galaxy long before humanity arose.
If such civilizations exist, we should expect to observe evidence of their existence, whether through signals, technological artifacts, or direct visitation.
Yet we have no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. Where, then, is everybody?
Questionable Priors Underlying the Fermi Paradox

Below, I identify three categorical sets of unsound priors that constitute the unacknowledged substrate of the Fermi Paradox. These are the unsupported assumptions quietly slipped past the audience by those presenting the paradox, a sleight-of-hand that disguises its foundational weaknesses. Many apparent paradoxes arise not from genuine contradictions, but from defective premises masquerading as established facts. In such cases, the paradox becomes less an instrument of inquiry than a salesman’s tool, exploiting the credulity of an unsuspecting audience.
The ethical skeptic examines not merely claims of presence, but equally the concealed assumptions, appeals to authority, and presumptions of absence by which competing explanations are excluded. An absence of established evidence cannot, by appeal to ignorance, be promoted into established evidence of absence.
In other words, what follows is a religious conviction costumed as a scientific and philosophical paradox, employed to sell its underlying belief without openly defending its premises. The audience is invited to marvel at the contradiction, never realizing that the conclusion was smuggled into the argument before the performance began.
It is not a paradox being demonstrated. It is a premise being sold. A stage trick.
A. An Assumed Absence of Observer Bias – Mankind’s observing culture and organizations bear zero bias or agency in challenging the following priors:
A-1. Earth’s historical isolation – Earth has never been encountered, surveyed, visited, influenced, or inhabited by non-human technological intelligence.
A-2. Earth’s present isolation – no non-human technological intelligence presently exists on Earth, near Earth, or within the local environment.
A-3. Exhaustive historical recognition – human archaeology, geology, mythology, and recorded history have adequately identified and excluded evidence of past NHI encounters.
A-4. Unrestricted contact – civilizations capable of reaching Earth would necessarily reveal themselves openly, intentionally, and unambiguously.
A-5. Absence of selective concealment – advanced intelligence would have no sufficient reason or capability to conceal its presence, origins, technologies, or activities.
A-6. Exhaustive contemporary recognition – existing observations of anomalous phenomena contain no genuine NHI activity, despite unresolved questions concerning the origin of a large body of observations.
B. An Assumtion of Scientific Prowess – Mankind’s observing methods and technology are sufficient, comprehensive, and complete as a descriptive process and/or in attaining a successful observation of a condition of exclusion, in terms of the following:
B-1. Technological continuity – advanced civilizations continue employing technologies recognizable to our current scientific instrumentation for long periods of time.
B-2. Electromagnetic detectability – advanced intelligence produces detectable radio, optical, thermal, or other signatures that persist over substantial periods.
B-3. Observational sufficiency – humanity has surveyed enough of the relevant spatial, temporal, spectral, and technological search space to regard non-detection as meaningful evidence of absence.
B-4. Universal physical accessibility – interstellar travel and contact must occur through mechanisms compatible with our present understanding of engineering, propulsion, and travel times.
B-5. Non-detection equals nonexistence – the absence of universally accepted, conclusive evidence of NHI is equivalent to the established absence of NHI itself in all contexts of observation.
C. An Assumed Competency in Life Itself – Mankind’s assumptions about the origin of life is comprehensive, complete, and accurate in all it facets, specficially:
C-1. Spontaneous origination – every technological civilization must originate independently through natural abiogenesis and evolution, rather than through seeding, intervention, or propagation from an earlier or shepherding civilization.
C-2. Universal developmental sequence – every civilization must pass through a technological developmental phase sufficiently similar to humanity’s present condition to allow for its observation.
C-3. Extended technological adolescence – civilizations remain in a recognizable technological, expansionist, or electromagnetic-signaling phase long enough to be observed.
C-4. Civilizational independence – civilizations emerge and develop as isolated entities rather than as members, descendants, or engineered extensions of an existing network.
C-5. Anthropomorphic motivation – advanced intelligence shares human incentives involving exploration, expansion, colonization, communication, and territorial acquisition.
C-6. Expansion imperative – a sufficiently advanced civilization will necessarily as a rule seek to expand throughout the galaxy.
C-7. Exponential colonization – expansion follows a self-replicating, geographically expansive pattern rather than selective, bounded, or deliberately constrained or concealed activity.
C-8. Life as a rule – life must originate as a physical set of chemistry and the resulting physcial organisms. Life cannot originate by other means, nor evolve into other modes and forms of existence.
Of course, the objection will be raised that, therefore, I am a “believer.” What horse maneur. I do not presume that non-human intelligence lurks behind every unexplained phenomenon, nor do I presume it absent from them all. The former is the folly of a mind too eager to believe; the latter, the arrogance of one too proud to look.
For the silliness of presumption is no great sin, but mistaking ignorance for knowledge is a mighty one.
